Make Difficult Selections in Photoshop

We’ve all been there. We have a photo of an animal with lots of fur, or a faint object that blends well with its background. We need to extract the object from its surroundings, but doing this with conventional tools just isn’t ideal. You could use the lasso tool, but there is no way that you will have the accuracy you need. You could use the magnetic lasso tool, but the edges will be too crisp. The Quick Selection Tool does a good job of selecting the base object, but it does a poor job of selecting the finer areas. So what do you do? In the video below, I will show you how to make difficult selections in Photoshop quickly and easily.

The best part about this technique is that you don’t have to make a precise selection. You can make a loose general selection, and then refine it. With the right settings, you can do 10 times better than you could do by hand. Also, with the method that I show you, it creates a new layer with a lay mask. This makes it easy to go back and make refinements to your selection, so you don’t have to live with what the menu will allow you to do. You can infinitely go back in and paint white of black on the mask in order to get even more precise selections. I use this technique frequently with great success.
