Perspective Distortion

When you’re trying to create an illustration, getting the right perspective can make all the difference. Trying to manipulate your shapes so that they take on the proper proportions can be tough. If the angle is off, your entire illustration is thrown off. A lot of people find the perspective tools to be a little difficult to deal with. Sometimes you just need to manipulate a particular object in perspective. The last thing that we want to do is over-complicate things. I’m going to show you a little hidden tool inside of illustrator that will allow you to distort the shape in perspective.

I found that using the perspective tool can become complicated fairly quickly. I don’t always need to arrange all my elements in perspective. Sometimes I just need to distort things quickly. Fortunately, using the Free Transform Tool, there are sub-settings that allow you to distort your shapes in perspective. You can distort your shapes in either vertical perspective or horizontal perspective. This is great when you want to create a quick vanishing point for your illustrations.

Be careful with this tool, though. You can easily over distort an object and throw it completely out of perspective. Once you’ve done this, it’s hard to go back. Of course, you can just hit undo a few times and go back a few steps. However, you can only do this so much. If you can master this concept, you can combine it with effects like clipping paths and opacity effects to wow your audience.
