The Future of Design and Advertising

I was asked a question yesterday that really got me thinking: What do you think the future will hold for design and advertising? What will be the next big platform to design for?
I thought about this for a long time, and my guess is as good as yours. People are always thinking of new ways to advertise. They advertise on the walls of a baseball field and any other sporting event that has walls or a set backdrop for the game. They started placing revolving advertisements on trucks that simply drive around, advertising local products and events. They just recently started developing advertisements for apps for our phones, ipods, ipads and any other handheld electronic system. The truth is, our field could design on any platform. I am no psychic or fortune teller, but with the 3D aspect coming back to television, I am sure it is only a matter of time before someone caters their advertisements to be enhanced on those systems. There are ads on game systems that are hooked up to the internet, I am sure they may eventually set it up to where you are playing an online game and during the loading time, they slip a quick ad for a new game or something regarding that target market.
A company over seas developed a way to project an image onto a 3 dimensional surface, so sooner or later, you could see projected ads of the sides of buildings. They might even eventually replace billboards. If they ever make 3D holograms a feasible reality, we may one day have to create our designs to be viewable on that platform. It may be more along the lines of animation or 3D work, but that may be what we all end up adapting to.
The truth is, I am not sure what the future holds for our profession. Times change, technology progresses, new things are invented. All I know is that we simply have to keep up.
