Use text to clip a picture

by | Mar 7, 2010 | Tutorials | 0 comments

This tutorial is extra short and sweet. Open a new Photoshop or Illustrator document. Pick an extra bold or black typeface, such as Arial Black, Meta Black, or Interstate. The color of the type doesn’t matter. In Illustrator, take a distinct photo that has to do with your subject matter, and go to File>Place to place your image in your Illustrator document. With the photo selected, go to Object>Arrange> Send to Back. Your type should be over the image, so position it where an interesting part of the photo will peek through.

Then hit command and the number 7 on your keyboard and that will make a clipping mask. The photo should be in the shape of your type.

In Photoshop, create the type layer, also disregarding any color choice, and place the image in a layer above the type layer. Then, hold the option key and click between the picture layer and the type layer and you create a clipping mask this way too.
