Create A Design Portfolio

Finding a really good creative job is a tall order. Sure, job search is easier thanks to the world wide web, but there’s always a great deal of competition for the very best roles.

Zerply is a social platform that says it can take the pain out of looking for a creative job. But what does it offer? And can it make a difference?

About Zerply

Recruiters are increasingly interested in talent over paperwork, and that’s great news for creative people. There are a range of websites springing up to support this newfound interest in originality, spark and ingenuity, and Zerply is well worth a look.

Zerply is a website founded in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, that matches creative people with positions in gaming, entertainment and television. Think of it as a creative version of LinkedIn. Rather than pushing employment credentials and qualifications, Zerply focuses on showcasing creative talents.

The site has some high-profile members such as Kevin Lan, the animation lead for Life of Pi, and Melanie Beisswenger, one of the animators on movies such as Happy Feet 2. It’s clearly a site that’s worth joining, and the calibre of its members suggests that it’s a major player in its niche.

But there is a huge down side. Membership is by approval only; you’ll need to apply to be considered and await your turn. Zerply used to be totally open, so this is a real shame. If you’re looking for a job right now, you probably don’t want to wait around for the Zerply team to look into your details and manually activate your account. After all, it could take months for Zerply to get around to it.

Alternatives to Zerply

So what other resources are there for creative professionals?

  • enthuse.me is a great site for any creative freelancer or jobhunter. Signup is quick and easy, but completing the profile section could be more intuitive. You can import your CV from LinkedIn, which is handy.
  • about.me is a more general site that can signpost people to your blog, your website and your social media pages. Think of it as a basic hub where you can place all of your links. One big benefit is the background image which you can tweak to your liking; with a little investment of time, you could turn it into a massive portfolio piece.
  • Carbonmade is an attractive portfolio site that offers up to 5 projects on its free plan. You can upgrade for more. If you need to build a quick online presence to showcase creative work, Carbonmade is one of the better sites on the web for this purpose.
  • Pinterest is worth a look if you need a free way to show off images in a simple interface. Beware its limitations, but have fun building your boards.

Whatever you do, remember that the site hosting your portfolio is merely a platform, or framework. It’s your own creativity that must take centre stage. As long as you find the site intuitive and easy to update, it’ll be a valuable tool as you search for your new creative role.
