The pitfalls of free web hosting

Should I Use Free Web Hosting?

It may seem attractive to use a free web host and for some people this can be fine but there are several disadvantages to using free web hosting. Here’s what you need to know about free web hosting and why you should avoid it.

Lousy Domain Name

When you use free web hosting you don’t get a full domain name. You get a domain such as www.freehost/mywebsite/ which doesn’t look very good or professional. When people see your web address they automatically think of you as an amateur even though you’re professional.  Today, a domain name and hosting package is quite cheap and there’s no real excuse not to purchase your own domain name and use this. If you want to promote your business online then you need to get a real genuine domain name not the one provided to you by free web hosting as it look amateurish.

Advertising

Many free web hosting providers also put advertising on your website that does nothing for your website but makes the host money. They often don’t allow you to use your own advertising at all on your website or limit it a great deal. The advertising often blocks part of your site and makes your entire site see like a spam site to viewers. If you want to control your own advertising then a paid full host is your best option.

Slow Speed

Free web hosting services are often slow and this is because there’s so much content on the free servers that everything grinds to a halt. If you need speed and performance with your website then you want to avoid free web hosting and go with a full provider because you’ll get better performance and reliability with your hosting.

Lack of Features

Free web hosting often has a poor set of features that you can use. Many of these features are often disabled until you sign up for a full domain and package. If you need a lot of features then it’s best to not go with any free hosting providers as you want the robust features that are provided to you when you get a full domain package.

You End Up Paying Anyway

If you want a few bells and whistles, you’ll end up paying for free web hosting in the long run. You may be only allowed to have so much traffic, or if you want extended features, such as email, forms, or any special integration, you’re likely to have to pay for it. Also, if you want you own custom domain, you’ll likely have to pay for it. That usually isn’t a free option with sites that offer “free hosting”.

Lousy Indexing

Search engines such as Google will index .com or other extension before they index your site if they even index it at all. If you need a good search engine placement you want a full website package. You may get indexed by search engines with a free site, but it’s still best to go with an established extension and get the traffic that you need to your website.

Go with a free host if it’s your first website and you’re just testing the waters or experimenting online. If you’re in business, or want to be seen as a professional online then you need a full domain name and a full hosting provider. Free web hosting is best avoided if you want to establish a legitimate presence online. The best services and reliability will be found with a full comprehensive website package.
