Repairing a Scratched Computer Screen

by | Mar 27, 2010 | Articles | 0 comments

This is not directly design related, but it is a real life situation that would make anyone worry. Recently, we just noticed a scratch on one of our new Macbook laptop screens. it wasn’t easily noticeable until the screen displayed a light color, and when it was, the scratch appeared as a rainbow line that was easy to see. No one, especially a designer, wants to have a scratch on their computer screen. Screen replacement isn’t covered by the warranty, and to replace the screen would cost between $700-$800! Not wanting to shell out that kind of money, we took a trip to a local computer store, hoping to find someone to save us and give us a quick fix or a reasonable solution. Believe it or not, there is one….Vaseline! Here is what you do…..

We found that using a Q-tip gave us more accuracy than our finger, but you can do what works for you. Dab a little on the Q-tip or your finger, and work it into the scratch to fill it. Then take your finger, or the dry end of the Q-tip and wipe off the excess. You might also use a paper towel (One that doesn’t leave paper fibers behind) and us that to wipe away the excess. I couldn’t believe how well this works! I couldn’t  tell there was anything ever there.

I did a little research online to find out why this works, and any pitfalls to this method. Apparently, the petroleum jelly is closely related to what makes up your laptop screen, so it makes a good filler. The downside t this method is that you have to reapply the petroleum jelly every time that you clean your computer screen. This is not a problem for me, because we have a fairly clean work environment, and only end up cleaning a screen once every few months. Some people mentioned other methods, such as breaking out a Dremel tool, which I am just not willing to do. No thanks, I’ll just reapply petroleum jelly and I won’t worry about making the problem worse or possibly ruining my computer. Who would have thought that you could use petroleum jelly to fix a computer screen? Go figure!
