Starting July 1st, the iAd venture is supposed to be launched. With this in mind, companies are jumping to advertise on this new platform. Most of us are print designers, and a lot of us are web designers, and we are used to the different formats associated with them. It look like now we are going to have to learn a new formatting: the formatting for the iPad and iphone. Apple has pretty much set the standard for mobile browsing, and with iphones, Android phones and other touch screen mobile devices becoming more common, it looks like we have a new wave of media formatting to transition through.
Many large companies have already signed up for advertising on the iAd sector, including Unilever, which is absolutely huge. They are an umbrella over many smaller companies, and they alone are an absolute juggernaut. If large companies like these are behind this movement, then it looks like we had better listen or we will be left behind. Print and standard web design is still going to be around for a long time, but we all need to look to the future.
Is this a window to the future platform of advertising? I am going to go out on a limb and say “Yes, I believe it is”. Many people thought that the regular old ipod would just be a fad. Many people I know said “Why would anyone want their entire music collection on one machine?” Needless to say it has evolved into a powerhouse of a platform. With the announcement of the new 4G iphone, with Facetime, you can pretty much bet the farm that people are going to be crawling all over themselves to have one of these. There are already millions of iphones sold world-wide, and you and I both know that millions more are going to be sold with the newest innovations unveiled. you also have to add in all of the people who own ipod touches as well.
I am not saying that everyone should hurry up and jump on the bandwagon, but it would be a good idea to stay up to speed on the new technology, and that this looks like where a large piece of the market is going. With all of this being said, what do you think about all of this? Do you think that Apple is going to own a huge share of the market with this new venture? Or do you think this is a fad that is going to go away?
